Increased food prices in Ghana; is it as a result of high fuel prices?
Food is a basic necessity in life that has to be cheap for everyone humankind to use. This is not the case in Ghana as there is a recent astronomical hike in the prices of foodstuffs and food commodities in the country.
The price of food and foodstuffs that used to be sold cheaply cannot be bought now. Recent tour at big regional and district market centre in the country, such Kumasi kejetia market, Kumasi central market, Makola, Madina and Mala-Atta markets in Accra, Ejisu market etc indicated high prices of food and foodstuffs such as yam, plantain, tomatoes, etc in the country. What might have caused the so much increase in the prices of foodstuffs.
Maaconewsupdate gathers that, sellers complain that, food is in shortage and the increase in fuel prices has also affected food prices so much as they go to the hinterlands to buy these foodstuffs and transport them to the market centres in the city for sale and they pay so much transportation farr for conveying the foodstuffs from farmers end to these market centre in the cities.
However, the minister of food and agriculture disagrees with the sellers, indicating that, food is expensive but there can be never be food shortage. Again, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the Agriculture minister, posited that, his recent visit to the Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Ashanti and Eastern regions has convinced him that, there can never be shortage of food in the country.
Also, according to Gabby Otchere-Darko, " Ghana has no food crisis, enough food from our farms, yet food prices have shot up 3-4 times more in our cities far and over above rising cost of transportation. To make matters worse, global food insecurity is worsening as inflation, from challenges with supply chain, worsens...".
This situation has caused high cost of living especially in the city. Most people find it difficult to have three square meal daily and this is affecting standard of life among the youth and the unemployed.
So we ask, what are we (stakeholders) doing about it to change the narrative before matters get worse?
